The Alps
Without a doubt my favourite environment is the mountains. High mountains. Big ice and snow covered mountains, cloaked by mighty glaciers, wreathed in clouds and scoured by blazing sun and violent storms. They are wild, primitive and powerful. They fill the senses in a way that other wild places do not. They can be dangerous and hostile. A calm easy day can turn into a nightmare of blowing snow and twenty yard visibility in a very short time. Moving in the thin air is always physically demanding. Yet for those who climb in the high mountains, the hard days spent up there are the most fulfilling of all days. They are days that you can revisit in memory, days that can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run. Days of cold starry starts, sublime sunrises, far horizons and deep valleys. Many of the alpine peaks are possible with relatively modest skills as most mountains have an easy way up. So if you like these shots and want get going as an alpine climber, great. Go for it. Book a beginners course and I’ll see you up there.
